VIKING ETIQUET IS JUST ANOTHER NAME FOR DIVERSITY.DIVERSITY IN ALL
DIRECTIONS.It's having a gutsy,entrepreneurial perspective to all
situations and all circumstances.It's the belief that all the little
pieces all go somewhere,fit together. It's
also the belief that diversity makes any collective stronger. Take New
York, for instance...
In the 1600's the Dutch West India co. invested in New Amsterdam.
All were welcome
to settle here- provided that these new settlers would contribute to
the city's commerce.
By the 1800's Commerce Pleasure Gardens,were all the rave.A promenade
to see and
be seen. Like Vauxhall Gardens,on the Bowery, which opened in
1805,with mechanical models re-enacting a naval skirmish in the Bay
of Tripoli. The gardens,where artists
were commissioned ,also offered musical programs,balloon ascensions,transparent
paintings,pyro-technics and circus acts. This set the stage for P.T.
Barnum to open
The American Museum in 1841,on lower broadway. Spectacular
entertainments attracted
a working class ' bowery crowd ' .Men grew out their sideburns,or
"soap locks".In 1865
it all went up in flames,Barnum then starts Barnum& Baily travelling circus.
IT IS in this spirit,that VIKING ETIQUET NOW INVADES GALLERYBAR AT 120
ORCHARD STREET ON THURSDAY,JUNE 28, 2007 A.D. Special reception with the
artist,CARLUCCI BENCIVENGA,from 6pm to MIDNIGHT .
VIKING ETIQUET: 2 LATE 2 HATE , is about diversity adapting
,in this instance
to a rapidly changing city. As the show progresses for four weeks,
CARLUCCI BENCIVENGA will manipulate such mediums
as...painting,sculpture,video,printing,
sound installation,drawing,magic,found objects and performance. The
exhibit will be extended to include VIKING ETIQUET CASTLE on Broome
and Orchard,and LOOKOUT TOWER on Stanton and Orchard,on
Sundays,10am-6pm. In conjunction
with the LOWER FEAST SIDE les a la cart-a collection of
cuisine,commerce,and culture.The Lower Feast Side event will include
musicians,pushcart vendors,cooking demos&walking tours.It runs every
Sunday till September 9th 2007 . The Gallerybar exhibit runs from JUNE
28TH TO JULY 25, DAILY 1-7PM. THE EVENT IS SPONSORED BY THE LOWER
